How to Make an Acid Pattern Fit a Techno Track

To make an acid pattern fit a Techno track, write the rhythm around the behavior of the sound, then develop it across the arrangement with controlled automation. Balance, sidechain and EQ it beside the kick, bass and other synths instead of judging the pattern in solo.

1. Choose the sound and rhythm together

An acid preset or patch changes how the same MIDI feels. Envelope movement, filter response, distortion and accent behavior all affect the groove.

So let's make a MIDI track and then let's add our Serum. So now let's find the preset. I always like to find the right preset or sound first because that's going to influence the type of pattern I write. So we can go into our Elysium Serum presets. Okay, I really like this one. This one's like distorted, but it's still dynamic. It's not just completely smashed. So I think I want to write a pattern with this preset. We'll call this track ACID - Darkness, and then we'll hit Command + G to

group it and we'll title this Drop Synths. And then let's go ahead. We'll make this this pink color and now let's start writing our acid pattern. So for this acid sound, I'm going to make a one bar pattern and then just loop that across the drop and see where we're at. So let's highlight between bar 77 and 78 and we'll hit command shift M to make a new MIDI track. And then I'm going to find my root note, which is A sharp. All right, so I'm going to make this pattern

at A sharp one and then A sharp zero sounds good too. So I could always like dip down an octave or dip up an octave. So let's double click and I'm going to shorten this a bit just because I don't want these MIDI notes to be touching. I just find that it sounds better when each MIDI note has a little bit of space before the next one starts. So then let's just make sure we're on 16th note grids and we'll duplicate this across. Then let's turn this down like negative 15

dB because it's really loud. Okay, and that's our sound. So something quick to note is a lot of these Serum presets, they have this built in accent and you can adjust the accent with this macro four, but it's set up. So if you lower the velocity past a certain point, it won't trigger the accent. So let's select all these notes and we're going to hit command and then we're just going to drag down. So this is really useful because what we're going to do is we're going to like raise the

velocity of some of these to punch in accents. So you can see what the accent is doing. It just creates a little bit of variation in the pattern. So let's bring that back down. So all the velocities are at zero or one. And then the reason why I like to make 16th notes across all at the root note is because we can just pick and choose which notes we want to move around. We can bump it up an octave, turn it down an octave, turn the velocity up, we can adjust

the length of each notes, pick different notes in general. So starting with the 16th note pattern is like the foundation of these acid patterns. So let's look at this MIDI clip and we can hit command L. So we're looping this section.

Use a short starting pattern, then change:

  • note positions;
  • octave jumps;
  • note length;
  • velocity or accent;
  • rests;
  • one turnaround note.

The exact notes in the demonstration belong to that project. The method is to hear the rhythm and tone as one decision.

2. Make the pattern support the main groove

Play the kick, bass and core drums. The acid should add a recognizable rhythmic or tonal role without covering the pulse.

If it clashes:

  • remove notes that land on important attacks;
  • shorten the envelope or MIDI;
  • move the pattern to another octave;
  • reduce the low end;
  • save it for a less dense section.

Do not try to solve every conflict with sidechain. Timing and note choice often create a cleaner result.

3. Arrange the pattern before adding more sounds

Copy the pattern only through the sections where it has a job. Decide where it is introduced, where it becomes the foreground and where it disappears.

Use a simpler or filtered version before the full drop. Remove it for a phrase so its return matters. Change the second half with one meaningful variation instead of adding another lead.

4. Create movement with automation

The Apollo project develops a repeated acid pattern with cutoff and reverb automation. The second half starts and ends at a different energy while the core pattern remains recognizable.

So now that we have our pattern, we can just take this right edge of the MIDI clip and drag it across and it will start duplicating the MIDI clip and like looping it. So we'll just drag this all the way across until drop 1.3. We're just going to focus on the first half of the drop now because I think we're going to need to change up the pattern for the second half. So now that we have the pattern copied across, let's open up our Serum preset and let's start automating some

of the parameters so the sound keeps evolving as the drop progresses. So I'm going to start by automating this cutoff. Typically what I like to do when I'm automating the cutoff is I'm going to make a shape like this. I want it to start low and rise over time. And typically I like for it to rise slowly in the first half of this section and then it's going to rise a little bit more quickly. So this is generally the shape that I want. So let's listen to that and we'll definitely

have to adjust it. Something else I forgot to do is I need to copy this reverb automation all the way across. So I'll highlight this first bar and I'll just hit command D to duplicate it all the way across. So let's loop this and we'll just keep listening, keep tweaking. OK, so I like how that sounds. So what I'm going to do is I'm going to select this entire section of automation and I'm going to hit command D to copy it over. And then typically what I like to do for

the second half is have the exact same automation, but just have it start higher and end higher. So let's just take this entire automation and we'll move this up a bit. And I think we can take this first point and drag this down. So it's sort of like connects, doesn't sound super jumpy.

Keep the movement readable. Choose one main automation curve, then add another only if it solves a separate job.

Possible jobs include:

  • opening the filter through a section;
  • increasing a delay or reverb at phrase endings;
  • reducing sidechain when the kick pattern changes;
  • changing a macro that alters tone or accent;
  • creating a short hard cutoff before the return.

The exact shape is not a recipe. Adjust it to the section and listen through the full phrase.

5. Use effects as events, not a constant wash

Delay and reverb can turn one note into a transition or answer. Automate them for selected moments instead of leaving a large tail across the entire drop.

Check where the tail ends. It should not cover a new kick, vocal or section unless that overlap is deliberate.

Keep a dry-enough version of the main pattern so the groove remains readable.

6. Sidechain around the kick only when needed

Add sidechain after the pattern and broad level work. Adjust until the kick becomes clearer, then check whether the acid still has the intended rhythm.

A deep pump can become part of the sound, but it is a creative choice rather than a required Techno setting.

7. Fit the acid into the full mix

The Apollo acid is adjusted with a small EQ move while the track is playing.

Okay, so then I did a little bit of EQ and gain staging to the bass, I just felt like it needed more presence in the mids and the highs. But let's take a look at this acid line. We'll put a Channel EQ on here, and we'll put it before the sidechain. The Channel EQ just adds so much to that sound, it really just makes the sound fit the mix a lot better. And that's what I'm trying to do, is a little bit of that in small doses throughout the mix.

Use EQ for a clear relationship:

  • remove low energy that competes with the kick or bass;
  • reduce a painful area exposed by distortion;
  • support the useful midrange or upper movement;
  • leave room for another main identity sound.

Bypass at a matched level. A larger or brighter acid is not automatically a better fit.

  2. The pattern supports the kick and bass groove.
  3. The acid appears only where it has a section role.
  4. Automation develops the idea without hiding it.
  5. Effects create selected events.
  6. Sidechain preserves the rhythm.
