Dense Schranz Percussion Without Clutter

Dense Schranz percussion stays readable when each part adds a different pattern, tone or energy change. Keep the kick and drives as the foundation, add supporting percussion one part at a time, and use the ride to raise or reduce pressure across the arrangement instead of leaving every layer on.
Supporting percussion needs a different movement
In Turn Up The Bass, the kick and drive stack carry the main pressure. The supporting percussion moves around that foundation.
We listen across a full bar because the percussion pattern develops over a longer span than the quarter-note drive. That makes it easier to hear whether the new part changes the groove or simply adds more sound.
1. Start with one contrasting pattern
The first percussion part uses a lower, tom-like sound in an offbeat pattern. The second is brighter, more distorted and harsher. Their different rhythms and tones help them add depth without acting like copies.

So after the kick and the Schranz drives, the rest of the sounds are still very important, but they're definitely more supporting elements. So in this video, I'm going to go over how I made the percussion loops and how I use a ride loop in Schranz. So this video is going to be pretty simple. So let's just jump right into it. I'm going to solo the drums and I'm actually going to highlight a one bar loop and hit command L to set the loop. And the reason I'm not doing a quarter
note is because our percussion loops are actually like a one bar repeating pattern where our Schranz drives were just a quarter note repeating pattern. So that's why we're working with a one bar loop now. So let's listen to all the drums and then I'm going to solo the percussion group and then show you how I made it. So this one is really easy. I think I definitely started with this off beat perc. So I'm going to turn everything off except for the kick and this off beat perc so we can
hear what the groove is like. And this is just a very classic groove that's been used throughout so many different types of music genres, but it just works so well. So let's double click on our MIDI clip and take a look at our MIDI notes. First I'm going to start by right clicking and setting the fixed grid down to 16th notes because that is the smallest resolution that we're going to need. For this first quarter note, we have one MIDI note in this like fourth 16th note spot and then we
have another MIDI note on the off beat. And this pattern is actually just a half bar repeating pattern. So we have this note right here, this note right here, and then it duplicates and repeats again. And so for this perc sound, I decided to go with like a lower percussive sound that almost resembled a tom because I just felt like that's what it needed. So that is our first percussion sound. Then we have this other percussion loop, which I just drug in, didn't even process or anything, probably just threw it
in, said that sounds great. And now let's listen to it with the kick. And let's turn on the other off beat perc. So that just adds such a nice groove, especially in contrast with the drives that are just like relentlessly going. So just like each one of the drive loops is doing its own job, each one of these sounds are also doing its own job. I tried to take that same approach with the percussion sounds as well where this off beat perc, it's very like it sounds like a tom drum
and it's very percussive. And then this second layer is so distorted and bright and harsh. So that's pretty much it for the percussion. And if we go on the group here, there's no processing at all. So let's jump into the ride loop. So this is our ride loop. And the 909 ride loop is literally one of my favorite sounds of all time. It just adds so much energy and brightness to the drums. And in Schranz, that's exactly like what its job is. You can add the ride if you want more
energy. You can remove the ride if you want less energy. It's a great building block for your Schranz drums, especially when it comes to the arrangement of your track. So let's listen to all the drums together now with the ride and the drives and the percussion. And now let's listen with the ride off. So I know I played that out for a long time, but I just really wanted to demonstrate in real time how adding the ride and removing the ride from the track affects the energy. It's such an important
tool. And sometimes I'll even go in and pitch it around if I feel like it needs it. The ride is such an important part of the drums and it's just like that cherry on top and adds so much energy. So that is all of our drum elements. We have the kick, we have the drives, we have the percussion loops, and then we have our ride. And all of these sounds together make the Schranz drums like just a big aggressive wall. And so something that we're going to touch on later when
we start talking more about mixing is how I group processed all of the drums. But in the next video, I'm going to talk about how we can start arranging our drums because arrangement is one of the most important parts about writing a song. You cannot mix a song that is not arranged, but you can arrange a song and have a full song and then mix it later. So arrangement is so important and that is what we're getting into next.
Build your supporting percussion in the same order:
- play the kick and drive stack;
- add one percussion part;
- name its rhythmic and tonal job;
- add another part only when it supplies a different job; and
- mute each part while the complete groove plays.
If two parts pull your ear in the same way, keep the stronger one or change the weaker pattern.
2. Set timing and level before adding devices
One percussion loop in Turn Up The Bass works without extra processing. We place it, set its level and leave it alone.
Try that first. If the part already performs its job, another EQ, compressor or saturation stage may only make the section busier. Add a device when you can name the problem it should solve.
3. Use the ride as an energy switch
The 909 ride adds brightness and sustained pressure above the core drums. We play the groove with the ride, remove it for several bars and bring it back so you can hear the energy change.
Check four things in your track:
- how much brighter the groove becomes when the ride enters;
- whether the kick, drives and percussion remain readable;
- whether removing the ride creates a useful drop in pressure; and
- whether its pitch and level fit the section.
The contrast between ride-on and ride-off can be more useful than a ride that never stops.
4. Change drum density across the arrangement
In Lesson 19, we move the completed drum foundation into the intro. We begin with fewer active parts, add a noise drive and offbeat percussion, then bring in the ride for another lift.

We've spent the last seven videos talking about the foundation of the track, the drums, and how they were made. We went over the kick, the drives, the percussion, and the ride cymbal. And so those are going to be all of our intro drum elements. And so knowing that we're done sound designing all of the elements, now what we can do is start arranging the track. And so this is going to basically be like a mental shift from sound design to arrangement. That's going to have to take place. And real quick,
I'm just going to like walk you through what that is like and what arrangement is in general. So what is arrangement and why does it matter? Arrangement is how you place all of your elements across the track. It's the answer to what plays when, what's coming next, what's dropping out, what's being added, and how is the listener being taken on a journey over the course of like four to five minutes. And here's the way I think about producing in general. Basically there's two different axes. You have the vertical axes, which
that's what we've been doing for the past seven videos. We've been stacking elements vertically. First we had the kick, then we had the drives, then we had the percussion loop, and then we had the ride. And for the drums, that's it. That's enough for the intro. So once we have all of our elements in the vertical axis, now we can start working on the horizontal axis by actually arranging these elements into like a listenable song. So both axes matter because like I said, you need all of the elements that you're
going to use in the vertical axis, and then you need to arrange it across time so people can listen to it. And so it progresses in an interesting way. And so in this video, I'm going to just walk you through the arrangement of the intro drums and why I made these decisions. And then at the end, I'm just going to replicate how I went about this. So let's listen to the drums from the very beginning and then we'll go over it. So, that is our intro drum. So real quick, if
we zoom out, we can see that we have three major sections. We have the first 8-bar section, which is the high pass intro, the second 8-bar section, which is intro 1.1, and the third 8-bar section, which is intro 1.2. So all it really is, is it's 24 bars of intro drums. And so let's break it down from the beginning. The first thing I want to quickly talk about is this high pass effect that we're hearing in the high pass intro. This is a classic techno technique, whether it's techno, Schranz, hard
techno. A lot of these genres start their songs with like this high pass intro, where it's basically just the regular drums. Like if I turn this off. So I have an EQ8 right here, and then I have a, one of these sharp low cuts here for band one, and I am setting the frequency to 250. I just thought it sounded good here and I bumped the Q up. So there's a little bit of a boost right at the cutoff point. And then all I'm really doing is cutting out the low
frequencies. So the song starts out with a little bit less energy. And then when the bass comes in at intro 1.1, it's like huge. So let's listen to what it sounds like real quick without this high pass. And then I'm going to hit this orange button right here to re enable the automation. And you can see that I turn the EQ off right here because I want the bass to come in for these double kicks. And so that is basically what the high pass effect is in the intro. So with
that being said, the next thing I want to walk you through is the kick pattern. Because if we zoom out, the kick pattern is very, very repetitive. So basically we have a four bar loop right here. So I'm going to highlight these four bars, hit command out a loop it, and we can visually see. We have one bar of straight quarter note kicks, two bars of straight quarter note kicks, three bars of straight quarter note kicks. And then this fourth bar, we have three quarter note kicks, and then a double
kick at the end. And this pattern repeats across the entire intro every four bars. And the only time it changes is the end. And I'll explain that it's very easy, though. But this is our kick pattern. So that repeats across the entire intro. And so let's see what else is happening at intro 1.1 that's different from the high pass intro. So not only is the high pass actually being automated off so the bass comes in, but we've added this drive loop here, this drive two. And this is that noisy textural
drive. And I added that because I wanted the drives to have a little bit more energy for this next part. And then the other thing that I added was our offbeat perc. So what I'm going to do real quick is I'm going to turn these two sounds off the drive beat and the offbeat perc. And I'm going to play the transition into intro 1.1 so you can hear what it sounds like without those elements being added. And then I'll add the elements back in. Not bad at all. Sounds really good,
but I decided I wanted to kick it up a notch a little bit quicker. So now let's turn on drive two and the offbeat perc and listen to that. I feel like we just get into it much quicker and it sounds more interesting. And that's why I made this intro so short. Yeah, it's only 24 bars long. I just wanted to get the listener in to the track. And if you wanted to DJ this out a little bit longer in your sets, you could just loop it. But for the listener,
I wanted to get this track progressing a little bit quicker. So that is intro 1.1 and then intro 1.2 is so easy. The only thing I added was that ride. And that's really it. And that's why the ride is such an amazing sound because that's all you need to do to like add that energy. So let's listen to intro 1.1 going into intro 1.2. Okay, so now we hear that high pass effect come back in towards the end of the intro. And what's happening is we have two bars right here.
And I decided to turn on the high pass for this bar 23 and a little bit of bar 24. And so let's talk about this fill right here. We have intro 1.2 and then we're high passing right here. And so this is what I would call like a transition fill. And this is something that's really common in Schranz. It just like transitions you in an exciting way towards the next section. And doing something like a high pass here sort of lets the listener know like, hey, we're switching to a new
section. So that's all I really did right here. And I turned it off again for that double kick at the end. And then the only other thing that I did was I just deleted one kick here. So before there was a kick and it would have sounded like this. But I thought it'd be cool to just drop the kick out right here and just let the drives and the ride have their moment and then go into the double kick. And then we have the break. So very, very simple.
Use subtraction to shape your sections:
- place the complete drum foundation across the working section;
- remove the ride where you need less brightness;
- remove supporting percussion where the groove needs space;
- bring roles back when the next section needs more pressure; and
- listen across each change instead of judging blocks in isolation.
Adjust the section lengths until the movement fits your track. The point is the change in active roles, not one fixed bar count.

5. Test the busiest drum section
Play the kick, drives, percussion and ride together at a stable level. Then mute one supporting part at a time.
Keep a part when its removal causes a specific loss of groove, brightness, movement or section identity. Reduce or remove it when the only change is that the section becomes quieter.
This catches clutter that is easy to miss while building each part in solo.

- The kick and main drive remain the foundation.
- Every supporting part adds a different pattern, tone or energy job.
- The ride creates a clear change when it enters or leaves.
- Devices solve problems you can hear.
- The busiest section stays readable at a lower listening level.
- Supporting parts change across the arrangement.
- Every mute creates a difference you can name.
