How to Build Tension in Techno Without Just Adding More Risers

To build tension in Techno without adding more risers, change the behavior of sounds the listener already knows. Remove energy, alter rhythm, narrow or widen space, automate existing parts and create a clear gap before the return. Add effects only after the section moves without them.
Tension comes from change and expectation
A riser can point upward, but it cannot decide what the listener is waiting for. Tension becomes stronger when the breakdown or buildup changes a familiar relationship:
- the kick disappears or changes rate;
- a repeated sound becomes narrower, quieter or more distant;
- rhythmic activity increases while low-end weight decreases;
- a theme is teased without its full groove;
- the track creates a short space before the return.
Start with the parts already in the arrangement. New effects should support the movement, not become the movement.
1. Decide what the section must withhold
Choose the part whose return will matter most: the kick, bass, drive stack, main synth, vocal or full drum weight.
Remove it early enough for the absence to register. If everything remains at full energy until the last bar, a riser has very little contrast to work with.
Do not empty the section automatically. Keep enough pulse, rhythm or identity for the listener to stay connected to the track.
2. Increase activity without increasing weight
Faster snare or kick patterns can create forward movement, but they can also become chaotic when every hit keeps its full level and low end.

So now that we have that squared away, I think we can move into the build up. So the build should be pretty simple as far as like what sounds we're going to use, but it's definitely going to take some finesse when it comes to like automating everything to make sure that it sounds smooth, but dynamic. So first let's just go to this build snare that we made earlier. All I'm going to do is duplicate this across and then let's just get rid of this automation. And then what I'm going to
do is I'm going to double click on the MIDI clip. And then for this last bar, I'm going to change these 16th notes into 32nd notes. So we can right click, change the grid to one 32nd. And then let's just copy these notes all the way across. So if we play it, this is what it should sound like. So that increase in note rate is just going to create a lot of energy towards the end of this build. So now that our build snares are done, I want to go to
the kick and create a nice kick pattern. So we're just going to duplicate these four bars across and we can get rid of this automation too. So it's just straight across at a negative two dB. So then we'll have quarter note kicks going from bar 65 to bar 69. Then we can increase the rate. We can do eighth note kicks until bar 71 and then we can zoom in and do 16th note kicks. And then for bar 72, let's do 32nd note kicks. So we'll duplicate that across. I can just
consolidate this entire section right here. And so if we listen to the kick build, let's just say we're going to listen to it from right here. Okay. Just like the snares, if we increase the note rate, it's going to create a lot of energy towards the end. But with all those kicks happening at once, it just sounds absolutely chaotic. So what I want to do is just create an automation. So at bar 70, I'm going to start automating the volume down until about bar 72. And then what I'm going to
do for this last bar, I'm going to automate it back up. So the kicks are going to like disappear. And then for the last bar, they're just going to like come back to life and create like a burst of energy leading into the pre-drop. So let's listen to that. Just like I said, this is going to take some finesse. So that doesn't sound too good to me, but I like the idea. So let's just try moving the automation a bit and seeing if we can get this sounding like very natural,
but again, dynamic. So let's listen from the beginning. So I like how that sounds that sounds a lot more natural and smooth to me.
Try changing one rhythmic role at a time:
- shorten the gap between snare hits;
- use a faster kick pattern with controlled level;
- bring a percussion fill forward;
- repeat a vocal or synth phrase more tightly.
Listen to the complete buildup and drop. More notes are useful only if the return still feels larger.
3. Take energy away as the drop approaches
Tension does not always mean getting louder. A gradual reduction can make the return feel more physical.

So now that we explained what the Snare build is providing to the build, let's take a look at these drums because these drums aren't complicated because if we look at it, we have our kick, we have our drive, we have our offbeat perc, we have our ride cymbal. So we have everything that we would have had in intro 1.2. And if we look, intro 1.2 has the same exact clips as the build over here. But where we really take this to the next level is the automation. And that is what
we're primarily gonna go over today. So let's take a look at our drums here. And if we scroll all the way to the right, we can see we have a utility, this auto filter and this auto filter. So I'm gonna group these so we know that this group is our automation group. This is what is in charge of automating the build. So let's look at all of our automations. We have auto filter on and we can see this auto filter is just being turned on for the build. So let's click
this plus button right here and we'll make a lane. Then we have this auto filters frequency. This is automating like a, this is a low pass automation for the drums. And then we have this auto filter down here, which is like a high pass automation. So we will make a lane for that. And then we have this gain knob, which is doing some volume automation during the build. And I'll create a lane for that as well. So these are our automation lanes right here. And so if we turned this group
off, basically turning off all the automations, this is what it sounds like. So the drop isn't nearly as impactful because we have like these max energy drums leading up to it. So what I did was I automated the drums so we could kind of get an idea of what the drums are gonna sound like, sort of like foreshadowing or just giving a little teaser, but we're not giving it all away at once. So let's take a look at this. Let's talk about these utility first. I'm gonna turn off both the
auto filters so you're not listening to them. All I'm really doing is I'm turning the drums down 10 decibels over the course of the buildup, because what I'm doing is I'm slowly taking away the energy and then in a moment's notice, I am like putting it all back and drop 1.1. So let's listen to what this volume automation sounds like. So the drums come back like so loud and in your face. So this is a little trick where we're not doing that much. We're just turning it down over time and
then turning it up really quickly.
The useful idea is contrast. The exact filter points and level changes belong to that project.
Use a simple test:
- Play the buildup with the automation bypassed.
- Turn it on and listen to the return.
- Check whether the buildup still has enough pulse.
- Reduce the move if the section becomes disconnected or too quiet.
4. Automate existing identity sounds
A repeated vocal, lead, pad or acid line can evolve without changing the central idea.
Possible moves include:
- opening or closing a filter;
- changing reverb or delay amount;
- reducing sidechain as the kick pattern changes;
- shortening the audible note length;
- moving the part into a narrower register;
- automating level to create waves rather than one straight ramp.
Choose one or two movements the listener can follow. Too many simultaneous ramps can make the section feel like a preset transition.
5. Create space before the return
The last moment before the drop can be more effective when it contains less information.
Try removing the kick, shortening the effects tail, cutting a repeated phrase or leaving one identity sound in the foreground. Make the gap long enough to be intentional but short enough to preserve momentum.
Check the return without the final impact. If the section still works, the large tension decision is sound. Add the impact only if it improves the connection.
6. Add risers, reverses and impacts last
Now add effects for clear jobs:
- a riser reinforces an upward movement;
- a reverse connects the end of one phrase to the next hit;
- an impact marks a section boundary;
- noise or reverb can fill a space that feels too exposed.
Do not stack several effects because one is not solving the arrangement. First ask whether the section needs more direction, more rhythm or more contrast.
7. Hear the drop in context
Looping only the last bar of the buildup can make a change feel dramatic even when the full section drags.
Listen from the earlier breakdown through the return. Check:
- whether the tension grows in stages;
- whether one idea peaks too early;
- whether the drop is still the largest contrast;
- whether the listener can recognize the returning identity.
The goal is not a guaranteed “bigger” drop. It is a clear, intentional change in energy.
Tension checklist
- The section withholds something worth returning.
- It keeps enough groove or identity to stay connected.
- Rhythmic activity and low-end weight are controlled separately.
- Existing sounds move before new effects are added.
- The pre-drop creates useful space.
- Risers and impacts have named jobs.
