How to Make Drum and Drive Loops Fit Your Hard Techno Track

A drum or drive loop fits when it adds one useful job without taking punch away from the kick. Start with your core groove, name what is missing, audition loops in context, choose the strongest section of the file and blend it from silence. If muting the loop only makes the track quieter, you probably do not need it.

Samples do not automatically make a track generic

Using a sample does not remove the production decisions around it. The result still depends on how you select, place, edit, layer and arrange it.

The problem usually starts when you choose a loop because it sounds huge by itself, then leave it unchanged even though it repeats another role or fills the space needed by the kick.

We use a simple test: play the full groove and mute the loop. If you lose movement, texture or energy that you can describe, the loop has a job. If you only lose volume, turn it down, replace it or remove it.

1. Start with the groove the loop must support

Load a representative part of your track before you browse. Include the kick and the main rhythm so every loop is heard against the parts it must support.

Write the missing job in plain language:

  • “The groove needs a brighter repeated texture.”
  • “The drive needs a short percussive edge.”
  • “The space between the kicks feels empty.”
  • “This section needs more energy from a ride.”

Now you have a reason to choose one file over another.

2. Audition loops by role

In Turn Up The Bass, we start with the kick, audition drive loops in context and listen for what each new layer adds. One loop carries the main rhythm. A quieter texture fills space behind it. A short percussive sound adds a sharper edge.

So now that you understand how I like to layer these drive loops, I'm going to go into a new Ableton project and show you how I would start layering. All right. So now I'm in a blank Ableton project. I'm going to hit tab to go to arrangement view. I'm going to set the BPM to 155 and I'm going to delete all of our tracks except for one audio track. And just as a placeholder, I am going to find a Schranz kick loop. I'll use this one, a kick loop one, and

then I'm going to zoom in, highlight a quarter note and then hit command L so we can just loop this quarter note. And just so we have some headroom, I'm going to set this loop to negative six. Now we have our kick. Let's find our first drive loop that we want. I'm going to make a new audio track using command T and then I'm going to go into the sample pack and go to drive loops and just look for one that I like. And honestly, sometimes it's better to just start

dragging stuff in because you just never know how it's going to sound with the kick. Okay, I like the way that sounds. So let's just solo this and let's try to identify like what it's doing and what it's missing. So to me, it's not super, super percussive. So maybe we can add another drive loop that's more percussive. So we get those nice transients in there. And then maybe we can add an even noisier brighter one so we could fill in more of the frequency range. So let's go look for either

of those two and just see if we find any. So I really love these like texture drive loops because I just love mixing them in underneath our first drive loop. So let's drag in drive loop 24. And what I'm going to do is I'm going to start by turning this all the way down and then slowly turning it back up so we can just mix it into that right spot. And now let me play around with the gain staging of both of these because now I think I want to turn

down this first drive a little. And you can really hear just how much energy it loses when we don't have this second drive in here. Especially when it's tucked back like that, you almost can't even hear it. But when I remove it, you'll just hear the energy get sucked out of the track. So we have our main drive loop that's sort of setting the tone, setting the groove. We have our noisy textural drive loop. Now let's make a new track and we can kind of get a little creative with this

one. So maybe I want to find a percussion loop, something that's more percussive. That's pretty cool. Let's loop that first bar and see if we like the way this sounds. I'm going to start by turning it down all the way and mixing it in just like we did with the last loop. Now I don't love this, but here's a little trick. You can click right here, hit Command E. And then if we hold Shift and Option, you'll see this little like pointer icon. And we can actually cycle through the loop

just to find different parts that we like. So maybe let's try this little section. That sounds pretty cool. It's not exactly as percussive as I liked, but you get the idea. You can find different loops that fit together like a puzzle. And then in the end, it just creates this big wall of sound that is really the signature sound of Schranz. And I know I'm not walking you through how to make each one of these drive loops, but that in itself is its own rabbit hole. I just want to teach

you how to layer these drives effectively so you can start writing Schranz and Schranz tracks.

Use the same order in your track:

  1. play the loop with the kick;
  2. name the role it adds;
  3. ask what is still missing;
  4. choose a contrasting layer only when you need one;
  5. raise the new layer from silence; and
  6. mute it again before you decide.

This keeps you from stacking several large loops and trying to separate them later.

3. Set the level before adding processing

Most supporting loops should not become the main sound. Their value often becomes clearer when you remove them.

Start with the fader down. Raise the loop until its role becomes clear, then pull it back slightly and listen again. This stops a bright or wide file from winning just because it is loud.

When you compare the groove with and without the loop, match the playback level as closely as you can. More material will often sound better at first simply because it is louder.

4. Find the strongest section inside the file

A good loop may contain one section that fits your groove better than the beginning. In Turn Up The Bass, we move through a drive file while the kick and other drives play, then keep the section that locks into the groove most clearly.

Move through the loop in time. Keep the shortest section that performs the missing job, trim its edges and check it again with the kick. You do not need to use the complete file just because it arrived as a loop.

5. Give each loop a different job

Layering works when the parts fit together. It falls apart when every file tries to be the full groove.

A useful stack might contain:

  • one main rhythmic loop;
  • one quieter noisy or wide texture; and
  • one short percussive layer.

You may need one loop, two loops or none. Let the groove decide. Solo the parts to understand them, but make the final choice with the kick and full rhythm playing.

6. Use percussion to create contrast

Percussion can add depth because it moves differently from the straight pressure of the kick and drives. In Turn Up The Bass, we compare offbeat percussion, a brighter distorted loop and a ride so you can hear how each part changes the groove.

So after the kick and the Schranz drives, the rest of the sounds are still very important, but they're definitely more supporting elements. So in this video, I'm going to go over how I made the percussion loops and how I use a ride loop in Schranz. So this video is going to be pretty simple. So let's just jump right into it. I'm going to solo the drums and I'm actually going to highlight a one bar loop and hit command L to set the loop. And the reason I'm not doing a quarter

note is because our percussion loops are actually like a one bar repeating pattern where our Schranz drives were just a quarter note repeating pattern. So that's why we're working with a one bar loop now. So let's listen to all the drums and then I'm going to solo the percussion group and then show you how I made it. So this one is really easy. I think I definitely started with this off beat perc. So I'm going to turn everything off except for the kick and this off beat perc so we can

hear what the groove is like. And this is just a very classic groove that's been used throughout so many different types of music genres, but it just works so well. So let's double click on our MIDI clip and take a look at our MIDI notes. First I'm going to start by right clicking and setting the fixed grid down to 16th notes because that is the smallest resolution that we're going to need. For this first quarter note, we have one MIDI note in this like fourth 16th note spot and then we

have another MIDI note on the off beat. And this pattern is actually just a half bar repeating pattern. So we have this note right here, this note right here, and then it duplicates and repeats again. And so for this perc sound, I decided to go with like a lower percussive sound that almost resembled a tom because I just felt like that's what it needed. So that is our first percussion sound. Then we have this other percussion loop, which I just drug in, didn't even process or anything, probably just threw it

in, said that sounds great. And now let's listen to it with the kick. And let's turn on the other off beat perc. So that just adds such a nice groove, especially in contrast with the drives that are just like relentlessly going. So just like each one of the drive loops is doing its own job, each one of these sounds are also doing its own job. I tried to take that same approach with the percussion sounds as well where this off beat perc, it's very like it sounds like a tom drum

and it's very percussive. And then this second layer is so distorted and bright and harsh. So that's pretty much it for the percussion. And if we go on the group here, there's no processing at all. So let's jump into the ride loop. So this is our ride loop. And the 909 ride loop is literally one of my favorite sounds of all time. It just adds so much energy and brightness to the drums. And in Schranz, that's exactly like what its job is. You can add the ride if you want more

energy. You can remove the ride if you want less energy. It's a great building block for your Schranz drums, especially when it comes to the arrangement of your track. So let's listen to all the drums together now with the ride and the drives and the percussion. And now let's listen with the ride off. So I know I played that out for a long time, but I just really wanted to demonstrate in real time how adding the ride and removing the ride from the track affects the energy. It's such an important

tool. And sometimes I'll even go in and pitch it around if I feel like it needs it. The ride is such an important part of the drums and it's just like that cherry on top and adds so much energy. So that is all of our drum elements. We have the kick, we have the drives, we have the percussion loops, and then we have our ride. And all of these sounds together make the Schranz drums like just a big aggressive wall. And so something that we're going to

If two loops repeat the same rhythm and pull your ear toward the same tone, keep the stronger one. If they create different movement, blend them until both roles are clear without hiding the kick.

7. Keep the loop only where it helps the arrangement

A useful loop can still become tiring when it plays through every section. Add it where its role raises the energy. Remove it where you need more space or contrast.

The ride in Turn Up The Bass is a clear example: bringing it in raises brightness and pressure; taking it out creates room for the next lift. Treat your loops as arrangement controls, not permanent background.

A quick loop checklist

Before keeping a loop, ask:

  1. What job does it perform?
  2. Does another part already perform that job?
  3. Does it work with the kick at a sensible level?
  4. Is there a better section inside the file?
  5. Does the groove lose something useful when you mute it?
  6. Which sections actually need it?
