How to Make Techno Loud Without Losing Punch

To make Techno loud without losing punch, build a stable mix first, control only the peaks that do not help the sound, and increase level in several small, checked stages. The final limiter should finish the job, not repair the kick, bass or group balance.

Loudness is the last result of several decisions

Punch depends on contrast. The kick needs a clear attack, the low end needs room to move, and the rest of the mix cannot be hitting the final processor with uncontrolled peaks.

If the track becomes smaller as it gets louder, stop increasing the level. Find the first stage where the kick loses its outline or the groove stops breathing.

1. Stabilize the mix before pushing the master

Check the busiest useful section with the master chain bypassed.

  • The kick and bass should have clear roles.
  • Harsh layers should not build up through the section.
  • Short peaks should not be controlling the group meters.
  • The arrangement should not rely on the master to create contrast.

If the unmastered mix is weak or muddy, fix that first. A louder version of an unstable mix is still unstable.

2. Watch the complete signal path

Follow a sound from its channel to its group and then to the master. A channel can look controlled while several similar parts combine into a large group peak.

Do not use one headroom number as a guarantee. The useful question is whether the next processor receives a predictable signal and whether that processor improves the track.

3. Use group processing for a shared job

Group processing can make related parts feel connected and can control how their combined energy reaches the master. It should not rescue weak sources or hide a bad balance.

All right, so let's get into what group processing is. And to demonstrate this, I'm gonna show you the processing on the drums. So let's play our drums all together. So we have some effects here and I'm gonna turn this group off real quick because this is like our automation group that we had during the build. But we have an EQ here, which is our high pass EQ. We have an EQ here that is boosting the low end. We have a multiband compressor here, another EQ that's sort of removing some of

these mids and boosting the highs. Then we have a glue compressor and a saturator. So now let's turn each one of these effects off one by one and then we'll turn them on one by one so you can hear how they're being affected. So this is with everything off. To me, it just doesn't sound that glued together. And it doesn't sound like, like what I want is, like I want this to be like a mosh pit of sounds. You know what I'm saying? If everyone is mashing in a giant room,

nobody's really interacting with one another and it's just not that hype. But if you put a bunch of people in a small room and they start mashing, everyone's interacting. You're hitting somebody that's moving into somebody else, that's moving into somebody else and it just creates this like really dynamic effect. So that is how I wanna approach group processing.

Bypass the chain and match the perceived level. Listen for:

  • a clearer shared tone;
  • controlled movement without a flat groove;
  • a kick attack that still arrives clearly;
  • added density that does not become harsh.

Keep only the stages whose job you can hear.

4. Control selected peaks before the limiter

Some short peaks add useful attack. Others take a large amount of level without changing what you hear.

So now that I have everything EQ'd and sounding great, what I want to do next is gain stage it. And when I say gain stage, I don't necessarily mean like turning every track up and down. I think we're in a good place, but I want to apply clipping throughout every track in the mix that needs it or could use it so we can control those peaks and create more headroom when it's time to master. So I'll explain what I mean by that because a lot of people think that clipping is

bad or clipping is something that you shouldn't do, but we're going to use clipping as a tool to create more headroom. So for instance, let's zoom in on this clap track. We'll loop these four bars. I'll solo the clap and I'll press play. If we hit tab, we can find our clap track and we can see what our peak readout is. You want to control peaks because if there are really tall peaks stacked on top of each other, it's going to hit the clipper or limiter when it doesn't really need

to do that. So by clipping each sound in the mix, we can create more headroom by the time we get to the master. So we can see our clap is peaking at negative 3.3. So there's a ton of clipping plugins out there. A lot of them are free. There's K clip, G clip, standard clip. We can use all those, but for this, I'm just going to use saturator and show you how to do it inside of Ableton. So the first thing I want to do is add an oscilloscope for this.

We're using a plugin called Vision 4X and if we press play, we can see these big peaks and we don't really, we don't want that. We don't need that. So what we want to do is we want to add a saturator before this oscilloscope and instead of analog clip, let's select digital clip. And one important setting that you need to turn off is you need to right click on the saturator and make sure high quality is turned off. For example, if we have high quality turned on and we boost, there's

still a little bit of red, which means it's not completely clipping. But if we right click and turn high quality off, it's being hard clipped. So I don't even want to drive this sound at all. I just want this saturator at the end of each channel. So now when we listen to our clap, we're peaking at negative nine point two. And if we turn it off, it sounds almost exactly the same, but we're shaving off like seven dB of that peak. So if we do that throughout our mix, it's really

going to add up and help us out. So now let's listen to our whole track and we'll go through the mix and see where we can apply this clipping to shave

Do not place a clipper on every channel by habit. For each candidate:

  1. identify the peak in the meter or waveform;
  2. decide whether it is part of the useful transient;
  3. reduce it in a small amount;
  4. match the output level;
  5. bypass and listen in the full groove.

If the sound loses snap, depth or movement, the peak was doing useful work or the clipping was too strong.

5. Protect the kick

The kick often contains the transient that defines the track. Do not flatten it merely because its peak is taller than the rest of the mix.

First create room with level, bass timing and arrangement. If you clip the kick, use a small change and check its shape beside the bass and rumble. Saving meter space is not an improvement if the impact disappears.

6. Feed the final limiter a controlled mix

Place a clean gain stage before the limiter so the amount of level is intentional. Add a loudness meter after the limiter so it reports the result rather than driving the decision by itself.

Next, I'm going to add a utility because we're going to gain stage into our limiter and I'm also going to do something with this bass mono. So this is something that I like to do at the end of my master chain, not at the beginning because this is just purely like a tool for me. I don't like to use it if I don't have to, but sometimes turning this bass mono on will clean up the low end of your track. So I'm going to add that utility and then I'm going

to add a plugin called Invisible Limiter. This is my favorite limiter to use because it's just so simple and when I listen to it, it definitely is using like a combination of limiting and clipping in a really smart way. So we can get our track loud without it being too clipped, but also without it pumping too much like a traditional limiter would. Then I'm going to add another plugin called Youlean Loudness Meter and what this is going to do is this is going to give us a readout for how loud

our track is by using LUFS. LUFS is like a perceived volume loudness. So I'll explain more when we start boosting our limiter, but I'm just going to put this on our master as well. It's not going to be doing anything. It's just purely for reading the levels of our master. So

Raise the level slowly. Stop and compare when:

  • the kick attack becomes smaller;
  • the low end starts to pump;
  • hats or distorted layers become tiring;
  • the stereo image changes in an unwanted way;
  • the louder version is only more exciting because it is louder.

There is no single loudness target that proves a Techno master is good. The arrangement, sound choices, release destination and amount of distortion all change the useful result.

7. Compare at a matched playback level

Turn the louder version down until it feels about as loud as the earlier version. Now compare punch, clarity and movement.

If the mastered version is still better at the same playback level, the processing probably added something useful. If it is flatter, harsher or smaller, go back to the first stage where that change appeared.

8. Check more than the loudest section

Listen through a busy section, a quieter section and the return at a matched playback level. Check that the kick keeps its outline, the low end does not start pumping and the quieter section still creates contrast.

Punch-safe loudness checklist

  1. The mix works with the master bypassed.
  2. Channel and group peaks are understood.
  3. Clipping removes only peaks that do not help.
  4. The kick keeps its useful attack.
  5. The limiter is not repairing the mix.
  6. Comparisons are level matched.
  7. The final version keeps its punch and clarity without one fixed number becoming the goal.
