Why Your Techno Low End Sounds Muddy

Muddy Techno low end is usually a relationship problem between the kick, bass and rumble. Decide which part owns the deepest energy, balance the parts in context, then check timing, phase, note consistency, EQ and sidechain. Do not start by cutting the same frequencies from everything.
Define the low-end system
Write down what each part is meant to do.
- Kick: the main impact and pulse.
- Bassline: tonal or rhythmic movement around the kick.
- Rumble or tail: sustained weight and space connected to the kick.
Not every track needs all three. A long kick tail may already perform the rumble job. A rolling bassline may need a shorter kick or a clearer gap. If two parts both need to dominate the same moment and range, processing alone will not make the roles clear.
1. Choose which part owns the deepest range
Play the kick and bass together at a moderate level. Decide which one should carry the deepest, most stable energy.
In the Apollo Peak Time project, the kick is chosen as the main deep-low role. The bass is filtered so it can provide movement without stacking unnecessary energy under the kick.

So something else I'm hearing is we have our low end from our kick and the low end of our bassline happening at the same time. Even though we're side chaining the bass to the kick, we still have to think about the rest of this kick that has a ton of low end and rumble. This is when I would have to think, what do I want to prioritize? And in Techno, I want to prioritize the low end from the kick, which means that I'm going to low cut the low end from
the bassline. So I'm going to open up an EQ Eight and I'm going to select this low cut times four. And then I'm just going to bring this up to like 150. Now let's listen. It doesn't sound much different, but it definitely sounds a lot cleaner in the low end because you're not going to have the low end from the kick and the low end from the bassline phasing with one another. So this will just help there not be like an overload and a ton of phasing in the low end.
When you go to master your track, or more importantly, when you go to play your track out live, it's going to sound like a mess in the club. And that's just not what you want. So we've side chained it, we've gain staged it, and we've EQ'd it. Something else I might want to do is add a drum bus. Drum bus is an amazing
That cutoff is not a universal number. The useful decision is the priority. Another track may use a shorter kick and let the bass carry more of the deep range.
2. Set the level before adding more control
Turn off sidechain and heavy group or master processing. Lower the bass and rumble, then bring them up underneath the kick.
Listen for the point where movement becomes clear without the kick losing its outline. If the bass needs to be extremely loud to be heard, the problem may be its tone, register, note length or rhythm rather than its fader.
Check several sections. A balance that works in the drop can still overload the breakdown or buildup when the kick pattern changes.
3. Check timing and note length
Zoom in on the relationship, but make the decision with your ears.
- Does the bass note begin on the kick or after it?
- Does the kick tail continue into the next bass note?
- Does the rumble fill the gap that sidechain is trying to create?
- Do longer notes overlap into a new chord or section?
Shortening one tail or moving one note can solve more than another EQ band. Preserve the groove while creating a clear moment for the impact.
4. Check phase and repeated-note behavior
Layered low frequencies can add, cancel or change between repeats. If one kick-bass hit feels strong and the next feels hollow, inspect the note starts and phase behavior.
Some synth patches use several detuned voices with random phase. That can make a repeated bass note begin differently each time. Before flattening the track, check whether the variation is actually audible and harmful. If it is, adjust the synth or commit a good version to audio and build a repeatable pattern.

5. Use sidechain as a timing tool
Sidechain should create only the opening the kick needs. It should not erase the bassline or turn an unclear source relationship into exaggerated pumping.

So what I'm hearing right away is they're just not mixing together. So we're going to add some sidechain later because I know that's, you know, if you're an intermediate to advanced music producer, you know that you need to sidechain the bass to the kick to make room in the mix, but I'm going to listen to this without sidechain because I want to get an idea of how loud I should have it. Okay, that sounds good. The reason I like to gain stage without sidechain is because typically whenever I'm mixing with
the sidechain on, I tend to put things louder because the sidechain is moving the conflict parts out of the way. So I feel like I can get away with turning the sound up. But in reality, when you turn the sidechain off, it's just way, way too loud. So that's why I like to do my gain staging without a sidechain. And then I'm going to add the sidechain. So that's what we're going to do now. So some people like to sidechain into the kick itself. I think it's a little bit easier
to use like a ghost track or a ghost trigger. And what that is, is that is a track that has a sound following the kick pattern, but the sound is turned off. So you're not actually hearing it. This is useful because in our case, the techno kick that we're using, it's a really long sample. It's like a quarter note long, and it's just like a brick. It's just like a fat brick. So if we use something like a high hat, like a closed high hat, which is really short, the input
signal going into the sidechain will be shorter. And if we want it to be longer, we can just turn up the release. It's kind of hard to do it the other way around. You can get away with using like input EQs on the compressor, but to me, it's just easier to do it this way. So what I'm going to do is I'm going to duplicate this kick track that we have. This is why I like to use MIDI because doing it with audio, it's just a lot of copying and pasting.
And we're just going to call this side chain trigger. And we'll make this track white. Anytime I'm not using something, I make it white for me. It just, it just signals to my brain that I'm not using it. So then we're going to turn this off. I'm going to go in and I'm just going to make this sound really short. So if we listen to it, and maybe let's even turn down the sustain. Now we just have the attack. If we go to our bass group, let's add a compressor and
we're going to open up this side chain toggle, select side chain, and we're going to do audio from side chain trigger. And let's make sure we have it at post effects. If we do post mixer, then the track would actually have to be on for it to take effect. So just make sure it's not on post mixer. And if we press play, and now we can drag the threshold really low. And we get this nice shape. So let's listen to the bassline. I think by default, I have the EQ on,
you can turn it off. And I like how that sounds. It has a nice groove to it. What I'm most concerned with is the groove. I'm not really concerned with there being like no bass notes at all when the kick is happening, because sometimes it just doesn't sound natural. I just want a nice pump and groove. So if we unsolo this and we listen to everything, I think that sounds good. I think we can turn it up a bit, like a dB or two. And maybe we can turn the ratio
down. So typically what I like to do when I'm trying to dial in these side chain settings is I'll leave the ratio at four and I'll drag the threshold down until I'm getting the groove that I want. I kind of like this groove. Let's try a lower threshold. I actually like that better. It's less like of a dramatic pump and more like a straight across 16th note. And then once we get the groove that we like, we can dial in the intensity or how far the compressor is ducking down by
using our ratio knob. So you can see this number in the bottom right corner. Right here it's saying we're ducking negative 10.7 dB's. So we can make that duck less intense by lowering the ratio. Now we're only ducking negative six dB's or we can make it more intense by increasing the ratio. So now we're ducking negative 14 dB's. It's all to taste, but that's why I focus mainly on the groove that we're creating. So I'm just going to bring this ratio back down to four and let's turn the attack all
the way down. Once the signal from the side chain trigger crosses over the threshold, we want the side chain compression to immediately happen. So that's why we need to turn the attack all the way down. Now let's listen to it without the side chain. It just makes the mix sound a little bit cleaner to me. To me, when the side chain is off, it feels like it just gets so messy in the low end with the bass and the kick happening at the same time. And when I turn the side
chain on, I feel the transient of the kick just punching through the mix a lot more. There's multiple ways you can do this. There's a plugin called Kickstart 2 that I use a lot of the time. And if we turn off the compressor and we just listen to Kickstart 2, I think this does a little bit better of a job, but I did want to show you how to do it with the stock compressor and do it the traditional way, just so you don't need to go out and buy an
extra plugin. So let's just go with the stock compressor. I do think that it creates like a more natural sound and I like it in this case.
Use this test:
- Turn sidechain off and listen to the impact.
- Turn it on and check whether the kick becomes clearer.
- Listen to the bass movement between hits.
- Reduce the amount if the pattern disappears or the groove changes too much.
- Recheck a section with a different kick pattern.
Attack, release, ratio and curve depend on the sounds and tempo. Copying the visible settings is less useful than matching the timing job.
6. Use EQ after the roles and timing make sense
Now make the smallest useful EQ moves.
- Remove energy a part does not need for its role.
- Reduce a buildup that appears only on certain notes.
- Protect the useful attack or tone.
- Avoid cutting the body out of every part just to make the analyzer look tidy.
Check the full groove after each move. A bass can look cleaner in solo while making the track feel smaller.
7. Keep the master out of the diagnosis
Mastering tools can make a low-end problem appear tighter for a moment while reducing movement or punch. Bypass the master and solve the relationship first.
Once the mix is stable, check the final processing at a matched level. If the limiter or bus chain makes the low end blur again, find the stage that is reacting too hard.
Low-end checklist
- The kick, bass and rumble have different jobs.
- One part clearly owns the deepest range.
- Levels work before sidechain and mastering.
- Note starts and tails do not create accidental overlap.
- Repeated notes are consistent enough for the groove.
- Sidechain creates a brief useful opening.
- EQ supports the chosen roles.
- The low end holds together across more than one section.
