Why Your Techno Mix Sounds Harsh, Muddy or Weak

When a Techno mix sounds harsh, muddy or weak, the cause may be earlier than the stage you are trying to fix. Check the source and arrangement first, then level, channel processing, group processing and finally the master. Fix the earliest place where the problem becomes audible.

Start with a problem you can describe

Do not begin with “the mix is bad.” Name what you hear and when it happens.

  • Harsh: the upper mids or highs become tiring, sharp or crowded.
  • Muddy: the low mids or low end blur the rhythm and hide separation.
  • Weak: the main impact, groove or identity disappears when the track becomes busy.
  • Unstable: the same section changes level, tone or punch between repeats.

Loop the shortest section that clearly exposes the problem. Use the busiest useful part, but do not automatically play every channel in the project.

1. Decide whether the problem belongs to mixing or mastering

If one sound, one group or one section causes the issue, it is still a mix problem. A master processor cannot know that only one hat is harsh or that one bass note is too strong.

Alright, so now that we've completely built the track, I want to move into mixing and mastering. And before we start touching specific tools like cues, compressors, saturators, and whatnot, I want to frame this in a way that I think is more useful than just saying mixing is this and mastering is that. So the whole thing is a chain. Everything starts with sound selection and arrangement. If you have bad sound selection and bad arrangement doesn't matter what you do with the mix and master, it's going to be a bad track. And

so in this chain, sound selection comes first, then mixing, then mastering. Each step is built on the step before it. For instance, if you have bad sound selection, you're going to have a bad mix. And if you have a bad mix, you're going to have a bad master. You cannot mix and master your way out of bad sound selection and bad songwriting. So that's why we've been focusing primarily on sound selection, layering, and songwriting in the 40 lessons leading up to this. So that's the order. The goal is to start

with high quality sounds that fit together, mix those sounds together so the track feels balanced and powerful, and then master that finished mix. So it translates to the dance floor, your car, your headphones, and feels release ready. So with that out of the way, let's talk about what mixing is. I'm going to keep this pretty basic. So mixing is the process in which you balance all of the individual sounds in this project file. So they fit together, and this can be done in multiple different ways. This can be done with

gain staging, which I'm going to get into in the next video, which is just adjusting the volume up and down. This is the most useful and the most impactful part about mixing is just balancing the levels of each of the sounds. So they fit together. And to get good at this, it sort of just takes a long time to develop your ear and understand like what's too loud, what's too quiet. And it's something that just takes a lot of practice. But I always point people to start with this because it

is the most effective tool for mixing. There's so many effects in Ableton that you can use in so many plugins out there that make you feel like you need to use all of them in order to get a good mix. But it's just not true. You could mix a track really, really well with just gain staging, some EQ saturation, and you know, maybe some sidechain compression or just compression in general. But gain staging is by far the most important. If something is too quiet, you're not going to be able to

hear in the mix. And if something is too loud, it's going to be overpowering the other elements in the mix and sound jarring. So gain staging is the most important. Then I would say EQ is like the second most important because not only do you need to fit these elements together in a volume sense, but you can use EQ to remove certain frequencies that are clashing with others or boost certain frequencies that you want to accentuate and like bring out in the mix. For instance, if I had this kick and

I put an EQ 8 on here, maybe I want the low end to be a little louder, but I don't want the high end to be a little louder. You can't do that with just gain staging because if you turn the kick up, the low end and the high end is going to get louder. But you can do that with an EQ. You can take a band right here and you could boost just the low end. So this will shape and sculpt the tonality of each sound. And the opposite can

be done as well. If we have synths over here that have a lot of low end and we don't want it to fight with or conflict with the kick that does have a lot of low end, we could also use an EQ to remove the low end of this because we don't need it. It's just going to be muddying up the kick and fighting with the kick the entire track. So we would put an EQ on here to remove it. So that is basically mixing. We're sculpting the individual sounds to

fit them together. Mastering is different. Mastering is when you are processing all of your sounds together like it's one exported track and you're processing it all through the final main chain at the bottom. And you can see here my mastering process is so basic because I have so much control over the track in the mix. I don't need to do all these extra processes in the mastering chain because all of these effects are processing every single sound in the mix. So if my kick is too loud rather than turning down

the low end on the EQ on the master, that's going to affect the low end of every single sound in here. So it's going to turn down the low end of the synths, the snares, the vocals, the drives, everything. I would rather just go back into the mix here and then turn the low end back down in just my kick. So when it comes to mastering, I take a very minimal approach because I spend so much time on the sound selection and the mixing. So by the time I get to

the master, I can just turn that thing up. I can sculpt the track a little bit with an EQ, which I did here. Boosted the lows, boosted a little bit of the highs and the mids, because sometimes EQing the master will help you just shape the tonality of the track as a whole. And then you put it through a saturator and boost the drive and then a final limiter at the end. So we're going to get into this on a much deeper level. I'm going to go through mixing and mastering

on a granular level in these next coming lessons. But I just wanted to explain to you the difference of these two processes and the importance of all three of the processes, because sound selection by far the most important, followed by mixing and then way down followed by mastering. So now that we understand the difference between all three stages, let's get into the next lesson.

Mastering can shape a stable mix as a whole. It should not be asked to hide a bad source, repair a crowded arrangement or control one channel that is too loud.

2. Check the source before the EQ

Bypass the channel chain and listen to the sound in the groove.

Ask:

  1. Does this source already contain the harshness or mud?
  2. Is it in the right register for its job?
  3. Does it have the attack or movement the arrangement needs?
  4. Would a different source solve the problem more directly?

Replacing one wrong loop or preset can be cleaner than building a long repair chain. Keep the original muted until the new choice proves itself in context.

3. Check whether the arrangement is creating the conflict

Mute one suspected part. If the problem disappears and the track still works, the arrangement may be too dense.

Look for:

  • two bright loops hitting on the same rhythm;
  • several synths occupying the same midrange;
  • a long rumble and bassline filling the same low-end space;
  • a ride, hat and noisy lead all trying to provide the top-end energy;
  • effects tails covering the next section.

EQ can create some space, but it cannot give two identical roles a good reason to exist.

4. Build the level balance again

Lower the suspected channels and rebuild the broad balance from the kick, bass and main identity outward. A sound that seems dull in solo may sit correctly once the rest of the track is not pushing against it.

Follow the signal path. The channel may look safe while several parts combine into a loud group. The group may look safe until the master chain adds saturation, clipping or limiting.

Compare changes at a similar playback level. Louder often feels clearer and stronger for a moment even when it is harsher or less balanced.

5. Use channel EQ for a clear role

Do not sweep for problems without knowing what the sound needs to do. Use EQ to support a role:

  • remove low energy that the part does not need;
  • reduce a narrow area that becomes painful in context;
  • shape the main useful register;
  • make room for a more important part.

In the Apollo Peak Time project, a synth is shaped for the midrange after the kick, bass and hats are considered around it. The exact move belongs to that mix; the method is to fit the role between the other roles.

The hats were just really loud for that section and we just want to tame them down. So let's take a look at some of these breakdown synths. We'll put a Channel EQ on. And I just like boosting the mids of synths. With there being so much low end with kick and bass and then high end with the hats, I really like to boost the mids of the synths to fill out that mid range. So let's put a Channel EQ on the Reese bass.

Bypass the EQ and match the level before deciding. If the processed version only sounds better because it is louder, the decision is not finished.

6. Use group processing only after the channels work

A group processor changes several sounds together. That can create shared tone, movement or control, but it can also make every problem harder to locate.

Before keeping a group chain:

  1. bypass the whole chain;
  2. match the perceived level;
  3. turn the stages on one at a time;
  4. name what each stage adds;
  5. check whether the kick and main identity still lead.

If the group becomes smoother but loses the groove, the processing is not free. Decide whether that tradeoff helps the track.

7. Remove a clever change when the A/B test fails

More processing is not always more finished. The Apollo project demonstrates this when an experimental left-right EQ creates an unwanted stereo phase effect. The chain is removed, and the useful brightness is rebuilt with a simpler move.

So let's group all of these plugins and we'll listen to the song with this chain on and then with it off. After A&B-ing it, I actually don't like this left/right EQ. It works on some songs, but I feel like it's creating this weird stereo phase for this song. But I do like the brightness it adds. So I'm going to delete this EQ and then I'm going to add another EQ and just turn up the high end a little bit. So we have that brightness, but it's not like this weird left

and right stereo image thing happening. Okay, so it sounds really good with the changes. I actually really do like them.

This is a finished-mix skill: keeping the right to undo a technically interesting change.

8. Check the master last

Bypass the master chain. If the mix becomes clearer, check which stage is reacting too hard. A clipper may be driven by a few short peaks. A compressor may be moving to the kick or low end in a way that flattens the groove. A limiter may be revealing that the mix was not stable before level was added.

Do not chase a fixed loudness number while the balance is changing. First make the unmastered mix clear, controlled and repeatable.

Fast diagnostic order

  1. Describe the problem and find the section that exposes it.
  2. Bypass the source's processing.
  3. Mute competing arrangement roles.
  4. Rebuild the level balance.
  5. Make the smallest useful channel change.
  6. Check the group chain.
  7. Check the master chain.
  8. Compare at a matched level and remove anything that does not help.
